Melbourne Cup 2022 summary

The 2022 Melbourne Cup took place, as ever, at Flemington racecourse. The favourite Deauville Legend was well placed heading into the final straight but ultimately couldn’t keep pace with the top three finishers, as Gold Trip, Emmisary and High Emocean all pulled past.

The Melbourne Cup result was Mark Zahra’s first victory in the famous race and completed quite a turnaround for the emotional jockey.

Zahra had been due to ride Melbourne Cup 2021 winner Verry Elleegant the year before, but was forced to miss out due to a ban.

Zahra reflected on his Melbourne Cup triumph, saying, “It could have been my ride. Redemption day today. For today to come, it is just unbelievable. Mum used to give me the day off as a kid to watch this race so it’s absolutely surreal to win it.”
