The AJ Moir Stakes was inaugurated in 1976 and was named after the former chairman of the Moonee Valley Racing Club.
From 2007 to 2014 it was extended to 1.200 metres but otherwise has always been a 1.000-metre race. It was upgraded from a Principal race to Group status in 1979, then further to Group 1 level in 2013.
