The 2021 Caulfield Stakes race takes place on October, it is part of the major horse races in Caulfield racecourse. The event is run on the same day as an important three-year-old contest, the Caulfield Guineas race.
A weight-for-age race, the Caulfield Stakes is a Group 1 over 2000 meters. We have the race history, past winners, field barrier draw stats and more as we head towards the latest renewal of this massive race.
The Caulfield Stakes was inaugurated back in 1886. Run on Guineas Day, it is a vital part of the Melbourne Racing Club Spring Carnival.
Due to sponsorship etc, the race was known as the Yalumba Stakes from 1997-2010, as the Ladbrokes Stakes from 2016-2019 and as of 2020 as the Neds Stakes. It has always been registered as, and known colloquially, as the Caulfield Stakes.
The event was run over 1800 metres for the first two years. It went back to that level from 1889 right up to 1967 too, but otherwise has been a 2000-metre race.
It gained Group 1 status in 1979 and is run just two weeks before the number one race of its type, the Cox Plate.
