Race History
The Golden Rose Stakes is now a major selling point of the Sydney Spring Carnival.
First staged in 1978, the race was initially known as the Peter Pan Stakes. It was named after a former champ and was first won by Kapalaran.
In the early days, the Golden Rose race was run over 1500 metres at Group 2 level. As it gained popularity, it was renamed in 2003 with an increase in prize money to $1 million. Despite the prize money, its Group status was removed and the race distance was reduced to 1400m.
That was to change dramatically. The Golden Rose was given Listed status in 2005, Group 3 status in 2006, rising to Group 2 in 2008 and then Group 1 in 2009.
