Race History
The first Goodwood race was held in 1881 as a traditional handicap event. The event was granted Group 1 status in 1980, before which it was a principal race. In 2006, the race was changed to a set weight with penalties event to try and attract a higher quality field.
The desired effect was achieved, with a variety of high-quality horses now competing in the event. Black Caviar competed and won in 2012, bringing much attention to the race before she embarked on her UK tour.
One trainer, Walter Hickenbotham, has achieved five wins at the Goodwood, all in the early 1900s. Meanwhile, South Australian jockey John Letts has also achieved five victories throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.
The Goodwood is the closing Group 1 event of the Adelaide Autumn Carnival and is the headline event on the 9-race card. On the same day, the Doomben 10,000 is held in Brisbane.
