One of the top names in the sport is Kerrin McEvoy.
In a long and successful career, McEvoy has won so many of the top races and that includes three Melbourne Cups. We’re looking a little closer at the great jockey, as well as his Cup performances.
About Kerrin McEvoy
Kerrin McEvoy was born in Streaky Bay, SA, in 1980.
In the course of his career, he has won a Caulfield Cup, a Golden Slipper and three Everests. Those achievements, while excellent, are way behind some other Melbourne Cup winners. This makes his three victories in the race all the more outstanding.
He won his third Melbourne Cup for major owners Godolphin. His association with Sheikh Mohammed’s operation also led to him gaining experience by riding in Europe.
McEvoy managed to win two major Group 1 races in England, coincidentally the only two offered at Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire.
In 2004, he won the St Leger Stakes on Rule of Law. This is the last of the five Classics in England. Later, in 2007, he also took the Racing Post Trophy aboard Ibn Khaldun. That race is the last Group 1 of the season for two-year-olds.
Melbourne Cup Achievements
As well as winning three times, Kerrin McEvoy has been otherwise consistent in the Melbourne Cup.
His performance level never dropped as he got older. He was second in the race in 2009 and 2020. He was also fourth in 2022.
Nothing will beat his three wins however, the last of which came in 2018.
Kerrin McEvoy’s Melbourne Cup Wins
The sixteen-year gap between Kerrin McEvoy’s first and second Melbourne Cup wins was simply too long. He quickly put that right however when winning within two years aboard English raider Cross Counter. All three McEvoy wins:
Year | Winner & Age | Trainer | Horse Owner | Time |
---|---|---|---|---|
2018 | Cross Counter/4 | Charlie Appleby | Godolphin | 3:21.17 |
2016 | Almandin/7 | Robert Hickmott | Lloyd Williams et al | 3:20.58 |
2000 | Brew/6 | Mike Moroney | Gurner’s Bloodstock | 3:18.68 |
Much as with Damien Oliver, there are a couple of things which truly stand out with McEvoy’s three wins.
Firstly, he has achieved them for very different connections. He hasn’t been handed top rides by a dominant trainer.
Secondly, he has achieved this feat over a long period of time. Always on the premises, McEvoy constantly threatened to win Melbourne Cups and did it so as soon as he had the ammunition.
Though he wasn’t hand rides by one major operation, the fact that names such as Charlie Appleby, Godolphin, Lloyd Williams and Robert Hickmott appear in the list shows he is fully trusted by the best in the business.
