The Memsie Stakes race is a Group 1 event held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. It’s been won in the past by some of the greats, not least Makybe Diva.
The 2023 renewal of the Memsie Stakes takes place on August 27th. We have all the information you need in the build-up to the event including who won in the past, top form indicators and barrier stats.
Race History
The Memsie Stakes was inaugurated back in 1899. From its inception it was a Principal Race, changed in 1979 to Group 2 status. It was further upgraded in 2013 and since then has been run as a Group 1 event.
Sandown Racecourse hosted this race in 1984. Every other running, from 1899 to 1983 and from 1985 to now, has taken place at Caulfield.
The race has become known as one taken by real champions. Ajax won the Memsie Stakes three times, while it was also won by superstars So You Think and Makybe Diva among others.

Form Indicators
Favourites have done well in this race. In 14 renewals, eight favourites came in between 2007 and 2020. Those running first or second time out have also won the lion’s share of Memsie Stakes races.
You’ll also want your horse to be well-drawn, see below for more details. For future reference, the Memsie Stakes has proven to be a terrific lead-up race for the Makybe Diva Stakes over at Flemington so do keep that in mind.
Barrier Draw Statistics
The final field barrier draw is very much what helps to form tips, as well as the betting market itself. Each horse has a different task handed to them by the barrier draw so it’s very important we take note.
Memsie Stakes Winners by Barrier
This is how each barrier has performed in the Memsie Stakes since 1983:
Barrier | Draw |
---|---|
1 | 2 |
2 | 4 |
3 | 6 |
4 | 7 |
5 | 6 |
6 | 3 |
7 | 1 |
8 | 1 |
9 | 3 |
10 | 2 |
11 | 2 |
12 | 2 |
It’s clear then that a soft barrier draw is needed. 28 of the 39 winners here (72%) have jumped from barriers 1-6.
