This top sprint handicap is part of the Autumn Racing Carnival at Flemington in Melbourne. Some of the best sprinters in Australia have won this race, we take you through everything you need to know.

Race History

The Newmarket Handicap was first staged way back in 1874. The raced was added to create even more interest in the Autumn Carnival as a sprint was needed, the 1200-metre event having been on the schedule ever since.

These days, the Newmarket Handicap is probably thought of in terms of prominence at Flemington as second only to the Melbourne Cup race itself.

Nowadays, the Newmarket Handicap is one of a pair of Group 1 races featured on Super Saturday. The Australian Cup is the other main event on that day in early March.
Some of the greats of sprinting have won this race, including Black Caviar in 2011. In 2018, Redkirk Warrior became only the fifth horse in history to win this race twice.
