The long-running saga surrounding invasive veterinary checks especially affecting overseas runners at the Melbourne Cup could be about to find a solution.
This is an issue regularly commented on by us. Now, just as Ireland produces yet more contenders for the Melbourne Cup, it’s that country which could too be offering a welfare checks solution via Equine MediRecord.
New Software to Be Used in Three Major Races
A company based in Kildare will now supply Racing Victoria with a new system for welfare checks. Equine MediRecord’s equine welfare software platform will be used this year in three of the biggest events run during the Spring Racing Carnival.
The software will be utilised for all runners in the Cox Plate and the Caulfield Cup. It of course will also be used for all Melbourne Cup horses.
The initiative includes a new version of Equine MediRecord’s platform which helps all runners. Rather than just Australia’s domestic runners, the software is on hand to assist those with international participants.
The software allows trainers and vets responsible for runners to use the system in order to satisfy the strict protocols put in place by Racing Victoria veterinarians.
Equine MediRecord’s strong global reputation has led to this implementation. Welcomed by Racing Victoria, this system allows the storing and recording of a full veterinary history. This in turn is seen as being crucial to long-term equine welfare.
Could the New System Mean a Return for Major International Trainers?
It was understandable after a number of injuries and deaths to Melbourne Cup runners that something had to be done. It has long been felt however that targeting international runners for more invasive checks was not the right course of action.
Since the checks came into force, there have been no runners at the Carnival from Charlie Appleby. He is arguably the world’s most successful trainer. His major rival Aidan O’Brien has too been less inclined to send teams to Melbourne.
Equine MediRecord’s software has been used extensively around the world. Clients already on the books include the Saudi Cup, the Breeders’ Cup, the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Britain’s overseer, the BHA among others.
The company has also seen some major international investment coming its way.
Anti-doping and full veterinary history is part of the software. Once any information is entered into the system, it cannot be altered. This ensures full transparency, It’s hoped that it will end the Victoria vets’ fear of allowing international runners without invasive checks.
Appleby and O’Brien’s Potential Contenders
If, and it is an if, the likes of O’Brien, Appleby and perhaps John Gosden are tempted back in they have supreme firepower. O’Brien has already spoken of the Melbourne Cup this year in fact.
Tower Of London is now right near the top of the betting odds. Gosden’s Trawlerman would be of even more interest, as would his Sweet William. Appleby’s Siskany would be yet another big hitter should he arrive.
