Preakness Stakes Odds

With a race with such high stakes, Preakness Stakes odds are often the talking point of horse racing bettors.

The Triple Crown should run in its usual order in 2022 following exceptional circumstances in 2020 which saw the Preakness stakes pushed to October from its usual slot in May. The next Preakness Stakes is expected to run on May 21st 2022. To learn how to read the odds, check our guide about horse racing odds.

Where To Find the Top Preakness Stakes Odds?

Preakness Stakes odds are formed based on the performance of individual horses throughout the season. In fact, the only runner guaranteed a place in Preakness is the Kentucky Derby winner. This clears the winner’s path, giving them a better chance at, ultimately, claiming the Triple Crown.

Unlike the Kentucky Derby, where up to 20 horses can compete, Preakness has a limit of 14 runners. Despite this, it rarely happens that all 14 starting spots are filled. Apart from the Kentucky Derby winner, the rest of the lineup is determined by the amount of prize money qualifying horses earned during the season. The rules are the same for the Kentucky Derby, two weeks prior, which means that the two races will share a lot of the lineup.

Preakness Stakes betting odds are usually released when the post-position draw ends. This usually happens on Wednesday of the Preakness week. The post-position draw is usually held at a ceremony in the Pimlico Infield. The bookmakers will offer the Preakness Stakes online well before the official start of Preakness betting.

Preakness Stakes 2020 Summary

Last year, Swiss Skydiver’s fantastic, battling win over Kentucky Derby hero and subsequent Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Authentic was a rare Triple Crown victory for a filly.

Going off at 11/1, Kenneth McPeek’s charge got awfully close to a track record at Pimlico. Authentic went off 6/4 favourite in the end.

Unless something comes out of the woodwork in the major prep races for the Kentucky Derby in early 2021, it seems Essential Quality will head the market for the 2021 Preakness Stakes and it’ll be interesting to see where Brad Cox sends him in the spring.

Despite a host of injuries to some potentially top-class three-year-olds; Nadal, Charlatan and Maxfield, it was a stronger than normal line-up in the 2020 Preakness Stakes.
Flying filly Swiss Skydiver was always overpriced at 11/1 and bigger, while the improving Art Collector was challenging Kentucky Derby winner Authentic for favouritism at 12/5 and 6/4 respectively.

As it turned out, it was a two-horse race in the end with the filly and Authentic together getting embroiled in a battle and pulling some 9 lengths clear of the field.
Up the home straight, it was the 3lbs in weight and the better trip Swiss Skydiver got that made all the difference as she just edged out the favourite, though the two went on to have contrasting fortunes at the Breeders’ Cup four weeks later.

The Preakness took plenty out of Swiss Skydiver who ran disappointingly in seventh in the Distaff, while Authentic was majestic in the Classic as he landed the $6million showpiece in great style.

How To Bet on Preakness Stakes 2022?

If you plan to bet on Preakness Stakes in 2022, you will have plenty of options at your disposal. The race is one of the key horse racing markets. This is why you can count on the fact that it will be offered by the main sportsbooks.

Which type of bet to choose?

Finally, as we get closer to the race and the lineup becomes clear, you will also want to consider which type of bet you will want to place. With every major race, the number of one time bettors is almost as high as the number of betting regulars. That is why we feel that it is important to go through some of the basic types of horse racing bets. This can help you make sense of the Preakness Stakes odds and choose the type of bet that you prefer. We will start with some of the simpler types of bets and move on to the more advanced ones.

Win, Place, Show

The three types are the staples of horse race betting. As you might have guessed from the name, when you bet on a Win, you actually bet on a Preakness Stakes winner. With Place bets, you increase your chances at a return by betting that a horse will either finish first or second. Finally, Show bets come with the biggest chances at a return because you will win as long as your pick finishes in one of the first three spots.

As you might guess, payouts are proportionate to the bet’s level of difficulty. Hence, the win being the most difficult to guess will offer the highest returns. Consequently, show bets, being the easiest, will have the lowest returns.

Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta

Now we move on to some of the more demanding betting types. Generally, these will offer the best horse racing odds. This is because they require you to make a lot more precise predictions. To place an Exacta bet, you will need to select the first two horses in the race in the correct order. With Trifectas, you need to guess the first three horses in the correct order. Finally, as you might guess, Superfecta will require you to correctly guess the first four runners. Naturally, the latter comes with the highest payoff.

Tote Betting

Tote bets are extremely popular in horse racing. Unlike the other types, we have listed, Tote bets come with live horse racing odds. The odds are constantly shifting because they depend on the amount wagered in a common betting pool. So, in case you win your bet, an equal payout will be given to all the punters who have bet on the winning market, minus the bookmaker’s cut.
