Scottish Grand National Odds
With the Scottish Grand National often being run straight after the Aintree Grand National (normally a week or two after), the Scottish Grand National betting markets are often more popular once that Aintree race has been run.
As these two big National races are normally run so close together, the Scottish Grand National odds don’t often settle down until the week before the race. This is mainly due to horses that fell early on in the Aintree Grand National being aimed at the Scottish Grand National just a few weeks later.
Most bookmakers will have Scottish Grand National betting available in their ante-post markets section for much of that current National Hunt season (Oct- April). However, many punters prefer to wait until they know the final Scottish Grand National runners before betting on the Scottish Grand National. You can also have a look at our page dedicated to horse racing betting to see the other horse racing events to bet on.
Don’t forget, that if you are betting on the Scottish Grand National ante-post that if your horse isn’t one of the final Scottish Grand National runners, you will lose your stake.
Scottish Grand National Runners 2022
While it’s too early to tell which horses will emerge as favourites for the Scottish Grand National 2022, we can have a look at 2021 to find the last Scottish Grand National winner.
The 2021 Scottish Grand National was won by the Lucinda Russell-trained Mighty Thunder at 8/1 and he could be back for more in the 2022 Scottish Grand National, but by the time the race comes around, he will be a 9-year-old so we’d have to see if he’s still racing.
However, it’s not uncommon for past Scottish Grand National champions to return to defend their crown – the last horse to win ‘back-to-back’ Scottish Grand Nationals was Vicente in 2016 and 2017.
In fact, two of the last eight runnings of the Scottish Grand National were won by a previous winner of the race, so it’s certainly worth giving a second glance to past winners of the race when the final Scottish Grand National runners come out.
With just one winning favourite in the last 17 runnings of the Scottish Grand National, recent Scottish Grand National betting has favoured the layers, rather than the backers.

Scottish Grand National Tips
When the final Scottish Grand National runners come out (2 days before the race) there are often many Scottish Grand National tips in the papers and on the internet from the experts.
However, with trainer Paul Nicholls having won the Scottish Grand National twice in the last four years, anything he runs can be seen as a Scottish Grand National tip.
Another Scottish Grand National tip to note, once the final runners have been announced, is to look for horses that have run in the last 57 days – all of the last 17 Scottish Grand National winners fit this stat.
But, don’t always side with the Scottish Grand National favourite as we’ve only seen one winning market leader in the race in the last 17 years – in fact, the average winning Scottish Grand National odds for the winner in the last 17 years are as high as 21/1.

Scottish Grand National History
The 2022 Scottish Grand National will be run on Saturday 2nd April at Ayr racecourse.
With supporting races at the meeting that include the Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Future Novices’ Champion Hurdle, then it’s always a popular meeting.
The Scottish Grand National was first run in 1858, while in recent years it’s not been a great race for favourite backers with just one Scottish Grand National betting favourite winning the race in the last 17 runnings.
With three of the last 10 Aintree Grand National winners having also run in the Scottish National the season before, then it’s certainly worth looking back to the Scottish Grand National runners if betting on the Aintree Grand National too.
