Sydney Cup Race History

The first ever Sydney Cup race meeting was held on May 1st, 1862.  The race is one of only two 3200-metre Group 1 Australian races, the other being the Melbourne Cup.

Though the Sydney Cup has never really attracted the same quality of horses as the Melbourne Cup, it has always been competitive and high class. Previous winners include the likes of Makybe Diva and Tie The Knot.

Nowadays, it is run as part of the ATC Championships in the autumn.  Other major races on the schedule include the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
