Thousand Guineas Horse Race

The Thousand Guineas race at Caulfield Racecourse is one of the biggest three-year-old fillies’ events in Australia. Find out more information about the top horse races in Caulfield.

Run on Guineas Day in October, the race is staged alongside the Caulfield Guineas race and the Caulfield Stakes race.

The Thousand Guineas takes place just as we’re all looking forward to the Melbourne Cup, but in its own right is one of the most important races in Melbourne. We have the barrier stats, race history and past winners as we look towards the next renewal on October 9th.

Race History

Not as old as the Caulfield Guineas, the Thousand Guineas was inaugurated in 1946. From 1988 to 2013, the race was run on the second day of the Melbourne Racing Club Spring Carnival but is now staged on day one.

Along with many other top races, the Thousand Guineas was upgraded to Group 1 status in 1979. While it’s a tough ask, these days should a Thousand Guineas-winning filly go on to land the Cox Plate later in October they are eligible for a $1 million bonus.
