Race History
The Winterbottom Stakes was first run in 1952. Initially a Principal Race, it was given Group 2 status in 1979 but this was upgraded to the current Group 1 level in 2011.
Initially a seven-furlong race, it was kept at that but altered to 1400 metres when the metric system was adopted. The race was reduced to 1200 metre in 1994 and has remained at that ever since.
After a shake-up, it is now part of “The Pinnacles” at Ascot. It is the feature race on the third of five big racing weekends.
