Race History
The race was founded in 1968 and is named after the great Manikato, winner of five consecutive William Reid Stakes from 1979 to 1983.
A Principal Race for eleven years, it was upgraded to Group 2 status in 1988 and then to Group 1 level in 1989. Formerly known as the Freeway Stakes before being renamed for one of the greats. The event is now run as the Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes due to sponsorship.
