Weekend Results Offer Cup Clues

IMAGO / AAP

Two of our recently featured horses ran well last weekend, as well as another Melbourne Cup winner.

Gold Trip was well backed for the Peter Young, though he was joined on the podium by an old favourite. Meanwhile in the Lord Reims, The Map put in a strong performance too.

Two Cup Winners Fill Places at Caulfield

The Group 2 Peter Young Stakes featured a busy betting market during last week. 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip was solidly supported and was expected to run well, while 2019 hero Vow And Declare was an outsider.

In the end the 1800m race went to New Zealand mare Campionessa, trained by Mark Walker. Ultimately going off favourite, she just about fended off good old Vow And Declare by a short head. Michael Dee just got the better of Billy Egan in the saddle.

Gold Trip wasn’t beaten far in the end with the market getting it just about right. Drifting out to second-favourite on the day, Ciaron Maher’s champ was only three quarters of a length behind the other two in third.

Plans for a similar campaign to last year for Gold Trip won’t have been affected by this performance. It was a strong run and we expect more success for him in his upcoming races.

The surprise was the near miss of outsider Vow And Declare. Danny O’Brien’s stable favourite may yet make another Melbourne Cup on November 5.

The Map Goes Close at Morphettville

Meanwhile at Morphettville, The Map ran well but was ultimately a beaten favourite in the Lord Reims Stakes.

Trained by Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray, the daughter of Alpine Eagle was a strong $2.60 chance at the off. Though able to fend off some strong competition, she was beaten by just under a length at the line by $8 chance Yellowbrick Road.

Once again, this was a solid run which it would seem would derail future plans. This race was always the initial plan, followed ideally by the Adelaide Cup over 3200m back at Morphettville on March 11. Qualification for the big one will be sought after. The Roy Higgins Quality or the Andrew Ramsden Stakes will each be considered.

How we watch the Melbourne Cup live in the future has been much discussed over the last year. Now, agreements have been reached.

Victoria Racing Club, Tabcorp and Nine Entertainment have all linked up in an eye-catching deal. The deal involves sponsorship, broadcast and media rights for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The new deal is set to run until 2029. The Melbourne Cup Carnival will be shown live on all SKY platforms, as well as the TAB app. Tabcorp then have the rights to sell the coverage on to betting providers.

Nine is the free-to-air channel, which means they can show the carnival via broadcast and streaming.
